Phnom Penh
In the heart of Phnom Penh’s business district, it is instantly recognizable as the tallest building, not only in the city but also in the whole of Cambodia. It is the country’s first five-star hotel.
The foundation for the Hotel was already being placed when we first visited Phnom Penh. The UN Peacekeeping Force was still resident in the city. Travel outside the city was dangerous due to wandering bands of the Khmer Rouge and mines.
We agreed to take over management of the Hotel and the Project if the Owners would be willing to make the changes we required to bring the Hotel up to InterContinental standards.
They agreed and we went to work. It took 4 years to build this Hotel largely due to transportation difficulties. All the materials, equipment and supplies for the Hotel had to be imported, as nothing was available in Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge had destroyed the infrastructure of the nation. We had to bring many things in twice as theft was rampant at the site. We even had to bring in a new set of elevator cables as the original set was stolen from the warehouse.
